Cassie and I just returned from a fabulous weekend in Scottsdale, AZ. We were invited to teach our canvas "Harmony" at Old Town Needlework. Our trip started in Tucson and we drove to Scottsdale. We had the best mother-daughter time! Cassie and I have such a fun and easy relationship. In the car we laughed, listened to our favorite pod casts, caught up on the happenings of friends and family and we even sang a few bars of a great song.

Janice, of Old Town Needlework, was a fabulous host and we had awesome stitchers in our class. The class moved along in pace as we all shared stores, tips on how to exact stitches, and our favorite threads.

As class drew to the end we had some time to visit with a special student who is batteling some very serious and long term health challenges. She expressed to us how important her stitching is to her. Not just the completion of the canvas, but the whole process--from choosing the right canvas, threads, and stitches. To the act of blending all the components together along with the most important ingredients of --"friendship", "comradery" and the love of a "common thread."

Cassie and I reflecte on just how blessed we are to have such a love of stitching to share not only with each other, but also with our kindred spirits--our sister stitchers.

May you all have a Peaceful Easy Day, A Happy Easter and Passover,
The silk petals are added with a Straight Stitch using River Silks 7mm#S56 Cactus Flower. Come up from the back of the canvas just under the edge of the base row of sequins, cross over the “spacer” and go down through the canvas at the outer edge of the painted flower. I used our smallest bead tube as a spacer to ensure gentle and even tension of the petals. You may choose to use a laying tool, dowel, or pen/pencil to achieve the look you desire. Again, turn the canvas with each stitch for pleasing flow of your stitches.

It’s a tubular woven rope like product that can be stretched thin, scrunched big, and pressed flat. It can be couched, stitched, stuffed, shredded, twisted, and turned. It's about the size of a pencil and available in twelve colors and packaged in two yard lengths. The rich metallic luster combined with simple techniques will amaze even the most advanced needlepointer.

It's been so long since I've made a blog entry that I forgot my password! Let me share with you what I've been stitching: I was asked by Lisa at the Yarn Barn in San Antonio, TX to come up with something special for her shop during the national ANG Seminar which is being held in her city this year. This was something new for me and I said, "Why not!" So, Lisa sent various advertising pieces with pictures of local sites and our artists put together the above design which I stitched! It was really fun and something different for a change. I used Sundance Beads in the lettering, Sundance Sequins on the umbrella tops, DMC Memory Thread for the Texas flag pole and top. My favorite part is the life preserver on the boat, I covered a round plastic stitch counter for knitting with pearl cotton and attached it with floss. If you go to the seminar, plan a visit to the Yarn Barn to see the finished piece which is available with a stitch guide, and also check out our SundanceTrunk Show.Cassie, Nandra, Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05421029754409820853noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7649262934049111118.post-72158590937500613152011-01-30T22:34:00.000-08:002011-01-30T22:34:58.084-08:00Border with pomegranates, white flowers, and buds
The top border on my Oaxaca needlepoint has white flowers with shisha mirror centers surrounded by French Knots, orange flower buds, and pomegranates stitched over red felt padding. Each element is connected with Outline Stitches for the leaves and stems. The background stitch is called Railway Ladder and it's done with two plies of floss overdye. I love this stitch when I want the color of the painted canvas to show and by using overdyed threads, a gradual shading is produced.

I was so surprised that I had missed seeing it until I saw the photo. I searched the entire border and couldn't find another missed stitch. So, I wondered if anyone else could find it.

It's a laid filling stitch. That means that you lay in some long stitches and then you lay other stitches over them creating a pattern.

It's always a surprise when we think we're finished stitching, and then notice that a single stitch was missed. Well, I noticed a missed stitch in this border. See if you can find it. Hopefully, you'll find only one!
The beautiful hummingbirds I saw reminded me of the one that resides on my current stitching project, Oaxaca-Tree of Life. I had such fun creating the tail feathers with Rainbow Flair and one ply of matching Splendor Silk. Then I added a few stitches of Fuzzy Stuff which I also used for the head. Kreinik Braid was used for the beak; Sparkle Rays for the breast; Floss and Splendor complete the wings and neck and the final touch was a bead for the eye.
And, what fun we had exploring New England! Dan and I grew up in the East, but the kids had not experienced the explosion of color that autumn brings to that part of the country. Lighthouses, lobster, pumpkins, corn shocks, picturesque Vermont villages, crisp cool air, apple pie, scenic drives, blueberry beer, and Indian corn were just a few of the cherished memories that forever will be etched in our hearts and minds.
I am going to be a great grandmother; yes our little Lauren is expecting a baby girl in February. That will make 5 generations of stitching women in my family. Wow! All of this got me thinking about the joys of the sisterhood of stitching. I can’t wait to put a needle and thread into the hands of my little granddaughter. I am sure that my mother had the same wonderful creative joy when we sat down to stitch together. Stitching has always been a part of our lives. Even though my mother did not do needlepoint, we credit her for sharing her “needle sense” with us. The creative expression that comes with stitching is truly priceless, from the explosion of colors, threads and design all combined with the high touch activity of the stitch itself has been a constant companion and source of friendship in my life.

You can see the original painting in its entirety at Jane's website http://www.plainjanestudio.com/Mexico/mexico.htm I hope to finish it soon so I can have it framed in time for the TNNA market in January. She was intrigued by the flower I was teaching using Wire Ribbon. She asked me to teach it to the guild, which I did by simply demonstrating the process without any written instructions. Later, I decided the perfect venue for getting the instructions to everyone would be to post to a blog which would finally give me the impetus to get one started! So here we go...

Crimp the V shape together and turn down the top right slightly. Then turn the right edge over only the width of the wire. This basically closes the the opening at the back of the petal.

6. Repeat steps 1-5 until all the petals are complete and attached to the canvas.

7. Cover the ring with the Buttonhole Stitch. Leave a long tail at the beginning and end which you will thread to the back of the canvas and use to anchor the ring into place.

8. Once the covered ring is secure, use the metallic to make long stitches in the center of each petal (see finished photo at the top.)

9. Finish by filling the center with a cluster of beads, French Knots, or embellishment of your choice.

Note: This technique works best on a painted or colored canvas unless you're using white ribbon on white canvas.

Finishing suggestions: Stitch the background and mount into a small box top, or make into a small pouch, fill with lavender, and use as a sachet.

We at Sundance Designs hope you enjoy using this technique for making flowers on needlepoint canvas.
